galactic astronomy

(astronomy confined to the Milky Way)

The term galactic astronomy is generally used for the astronomy of the Milky Way and its contents. The adjective galactic generally indicates astronomy of objects within our galaxy, the, Milky Way. However, there are some specific phrases in which it refers to galaxies in general, e.g., active galactic nucleus.

I have run across the phrase galactic astronomy used to refer to the study of galaxies rather than just the Milky Way.
