field star

(star that is not part of a star cluster)

A field star is a star that is not part of a stellar cluster such as a globular cluster or open cluster. As such, the Sun would be one.

The phrase is also used for a more specific type, a star in the field of an observation of a group of stars such as a star cluster. In that case, the term implies a star that needs its own consideration, such as not being included in cluster star counts.
