field galaxy

(isolated galaxy)
(galaxy not in a cluster or group)

A field galaxy (or isolated galaxy) is a galaxy not in a galaxy cluster or galaxy group. One estimate is 20% of galaxies are of this class, which includes most low-surface-brightness galaxies. Sometimes the phrase field galaxy is used intending to include those in a galaxy group, in which case, the Milky Way might be considered one.
