COSI

(2000s balloon-based gamma ray telescope)

COSI (for Compton Spectrometer and Imager, formerly NCT for Nuclear Compton Telescope) is a balloon-based gamma-ray telescope that has made several flights since 2005. It has science goals, including GRB polarimetry, but also serves as a pilot for technologies that will be used in future space-based gamma-ray observatories.

As of 2024, a NASA mission is in planning with the same name, i.e., COSI for Compton Spectrometer and Imager.
