ARO 12m Telescope

(ALMA Prototype Antenna, APA, EIE ALMA Prototype Antenna)
(twelve meter microwave telescope at KPNO)

The ARO 12m Telescope (Alma Prototype Antenna, APA EIE ALMA Prototype Antenna) is a microwave telescope operated by the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO), part of the University of Arizona. The telescope is physically located at the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO). An early use of the dish was to pilot Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) technology. As near as I can tell, it is currently used for millimeter wavelengths but the dish is likely capable of submillimeter as well. The current telescope is mounted at the location of an earlier telescope, the ARO 36 foot telescope dating from 1967, which underwent occasional upgrades, including a 2013 "upgrade" which replaced the previous dish with the APA 12-meter dish.
